Bauchi Network of Civil Society Organization in Water and Sanitation (NEWSAN) Bauchi chapter says hand washing is an effective way to prevent diseases and said schoolchildren should educated on good hygiene practices.
The state coordinator of NEWSAN, Mrs Titi Yakubu Yakubu, stated this at the Hand Washing Day celebration on Thursday in Bauchi with the theme “Choose Hand Washing, Choose Health” held at Rahma Conference Centre.She said this year’s celebration was aimed at emphasizing the importance of hand washing among the schoolchildren, businessmen and scavengers in the state.According to Yakubu, the day, which was originally created for children and schools but could be celebrated by anyone to promote hand washing with soap.She said the theme: of this year’s Global Hand Washing Day under the auspices of theUnited States Agency for International Development (USAID), Global Communities (GC), Water, Access, Sanitation and Hygiene of the Urban Poor (WASH-UP) programme, was to highlight the importance of hand washing.
This Non-governmental organization addresses issues relating to women and children (especially girls), the most vulnerable people. Concerns are dealt with as touching sustained livelihood for women and children. Matters regarding rape, child abuse, violence towards women and children, FGM - are set at top priority. 24 hour Help lines are available, seminars and workshops are organised and welfare programs are provided for women, children and widows.
