Case of Child defilement in Enugu

 A top government official in Enugu State is now in the custody of the National Agency for Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) for allegedly defiling an SS1 student.The victim (names withheld) is a student of Metropolitan Girls Secondary School, Ogui Nike, Enugu, and a house help to a family in the city.She is currently at the Parklane General Hospital, following bleeding and other complications arising from an abortion attempt.A source in the hospital told Saturday Independent that her condition was critical and only an operation could save her life.The illicit affair was exposed when the girl slumped during the morning assembly in the school premises.




Teachers, who rushed to assist her immediately, noticed that she was bleeding from her private part, although she was still conscious.On interrogation, the girl confessed to the teachers that a man impregnated her and administered some pills on her to abort the pregnancy.Based on her confessional statement, the teachers lured the man, in his 50s, to the school compound.As soon as the man drove into the school premises in his Kia car , the teachers apprehended him, stripped him naked, beat him to pulp and locked him up in one of the classrooms.He was later handed over to officials of National Agency for Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) and Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC).Although the man had claimed to be a contractor, the identity card found on him identified him as a personal assistant to the governor.Our sources said the man also claimd to be a prophet and owns a Ministry in Artisan Area of Enugu where he resides with his wife, a police officer and five children.His last child is 16 years old and a friend of the victim.The man’s Kia car was still parked in the school premises as at the time of filing in this report.When journalists visited NAPTIP office, a female officer in charge of Public Enlightenment, said the agency had nothing to disclose about the matter.When asked if the suspect was still in NAPTIP custody, she said: “We will not say anything unless you want somebody here to lose his job.”Asked why NAPTIP took over the matter that was not within its jurisdiction, she said the agency was empowered to handle “Other Related Matters.”
