Woman abandons child

AN unknown woman, on Saturday, abandoned a one-year-old boy at the Effurun newspaper market, around Airport junction, Warri, Delta State.The unidentified woman was said to have abandoned the baby boy at about 11:30am.A witness, who described the woman as ‘well-dressed,” said she arrived at the open space in front of the newspaper market with the male toddler, stayed around for a while and stole away unnoticed. It was gathered that none of the people around was paying attention, leaving the boy on the muddy ground with no clothe on.




Some of the newspaper distributors said no one knew who the woman was, as most of them did not even notice her presence while she was there. A newspaper distributor, Esther Okafor, said the boy was discovered in a pond of dirty water by a vehicle-ticketing attendant, who claimed to have seen the woman earlier.Meanwhile, Secretary of the Newspaper Distributors’ Union, Effurun, Akpaitam Aniekan, said the leadership of the union was yet to get a good grasp of the development.According to him, no one really saw when the child was abandoned within their premises.As at the time of filing this report, the chairman of the community hosting the newspaper market, Commander Rasaki Jerry (retd), had taken the unnamed child to the police, where he said the next line of action would be figured out. “My concern about the child is to take him to the police station so that they can hand him over to an orphanage. For the sake of humanity, a child like this shouldn’t be left to suffer. I believe every child deserves the right to be cared for, that’s all I have to say. From what I heard, they said the mother came to drop the child and they called upon me as the chairman of the community to take actions the way it should be,”
